New Omicron sub-variants better at evading vaccine and antibody treatments, reveals study

New Omicron sub-variants better at evading vaccine and antibody treatments, reveals a study

The latest Omicron sub-variants -- an including the BA.4 and BA.5 forms causing new a global surges in infections -- are even better at an eluding vaccines and most antibody treatments than previous variants, finds a study. Subvariants BA.2.12.1, BA.4, and BA.5 are rapidly expanding worldwide, with BA.4/5 now making up more than 50 per cent of a new Covid cases in the US. These sub-variants are thought to be a even more transmissible than prior Omicron sub-variants, owing to a several new mutations in spike proteins.

"The virus is a continuing to evolve, as expected, and it is a  not surprising that these new, more transmissible sub-variants are becoming more dominant around the world," said David D. Ho, director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at a Columbia University.

"Understanding how currently a available vaccines and antibody treatments stand up to the new sub-variants is critical to developing strategies to a prevent severe disease, hospitalisations, and deaths -- if a not infection," Ho added.

In laboratory experiments, Ho and his team studied the ability of a antibodies from individuals who received at least three doses of an mRNA vaccine, or  obtain two shots and were then infected with Omicron, to a neutralise the new sub-variants. The study, published in Nature, revealed that while BA.2.12.1 is a  only modestly more resistant than BA.2 in individuals who were vaccinated and boosted, BA.4/5 was at a least four times more resistant than its a predecessor.

In addition, the scientists tested the ability of 19 monoclonal antibody treatments to a neutralise the variants and found that only one of the available antibody treatments a remained highly effective against both BA.2.12.1 and BA.4/5.

"Our study suggests that as a these highly transmissible sub-variants continue to expand around the globe, they will lead to more a breakthrough infections in people who are a vaccinated and boosted with a currently available mRNA vaccines," Ho said.

Though the current study suggests that the new variants may cause more infections in a vaccinated individuals, the vaccines continue to a provide good protection against a severe disease. "Efforts to a develop new vaccine boosters aimed at BA.4/5 may improve protection against infection and severe disease," Ho said.

WHO strongly advises against antibody treatments for Covid patients

WHO strongly advises against antibody treatments for Covid patients

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has a strongly advised against antibody treatments for a  Covid-19 patients, saying antibody drugs sotrovimab and casirivimab-imdevimab are not working on new variants like Omicron. These drugs work by binding to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, neutralising the virus's ability to infect cells. A WHO Guideline Development Group of international experts in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) BMJ said that almost all a well-informed patients would not choose to a  receive sotrovimab or casirivimab-imdevimab.

The strong recommendation a replaces previous a conditional recommendations for their use and is based on a emerging evidence from a laboratory studies that these drugs are not likely to work against currently circulating a variants, such as a Omicron.

In the same update, the WHO made a conditional recommendation for the use of the antiviral drug remdesivir in patients with severe Covid-19, and a conditional recommendation against its use in a patients with critical Covid-19.

These recommendations are based on results from five randomised trials a involving 7,643 patients, showing 13 fewer deaths per 1,000 patients with severe Covid-19 taking remdesivir, but 34 more deaths per 1,000 patients with a critical Covid-19 taking the drug.

"These new trial data provided sufficiently trustworthy evidence to demonstrate benefits in patients with severe Covid-19, but not critical Covid-19. The panel considered the benefits of remdesivir to be modest and of moderate certainty for key outcomes such as mortality and mechanical ventilation, resulting in a conditional recommendation," said the update. ALSO READ: Ayurveda, yoga effective in treatment of high-risk cases of COVID19, claims IIT Delhi study

The WHO also a advised that three drugs used to treat arthritis - the IL-6 receptor blockers tocilizumab or sarilumab and the JAK inhibitor baricitinib - may now be combined, in addition to corticosteroids, in patients with severe or critical Covid-19.

This advice is  a based on new high-certainty trial evidence confirming a survival benefit for baricitinib with little or no serious adverse events when given in combination with corticosteroids and IL-6 receptor blockers.

However, the panel acknowledged some cost and resource implications associated with these drugs, which, they say, could exacerbate health inequities.

Previously, the WHO has made a strong a  recommendation for use of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, and a conditional recommendation for molnupiravir for high-risk patients with non-severe covid-19. WHO advises against the use of a ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine in a patients with covid-19 regardless of a disease severity.

Four cups of black or green tea daily can cut diabetes risk by 17%

Four cups of black or green tea a daily can cut diabetes risk by 17%

A moderate a consumption of a black, green or olong (traditional Chinese drink) tea is a linked to a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a study involving over a million adults from eight countries has a revealed. The findings suggest that drinking at least four cups of tea a day is associated with a 17 per cent lower a risk of diabetes over an average period of 10 years.

"Our results are exciting because they suggest that people can do something as a simple as drinking four cups of tea a day to potentially lessen their risk of a  developing type 2 diabetes", said lead author Xiaying Li from Wuhan University of Science and Technology in China.

The study, to be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Sweden next week, scanned 19 cohort studies.

While it's long been known that regularly drinking tea may be beneficial for health because of the various antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic compounds tea contains, less clear has been the relationship between tea drinking and the risk of diabetes.

Overall, the new meta-analysis found a linear association between tea drinking and diabetes risk, with each cup of a  tea a consumed per day reducing the risk of a developing diabetes by around 1 per cent, said the study published in a  peer-reviewed journal a Diabetologia.

When compared with adults who didn't drink tea, those who drank 1-3 cups daily a  lowered their risk of a diabetes by 4 per cent, while those who a consumed at least 4 cups every day reduced their risk by 17 per cent.

The associations were observed regardless of the type of tea participants drank, whether they were male or female, or where they lived, suggesting that it may be the amount of tea consumed, rather than any other factor, that plays a major role.

"While more a research needs to be done to a determine the exact dosage and mechanisms behind these observations, our findings suggest that drinking tea is beneficial in a reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, but only at a high doses (at least 4 cups a day)", said Li.

It is a  possible that particular components in tea, such as polyphenols, may reduce blood glucose levels, but a sufficient amount of these bioactive compounds may be a needed to be effective.

Despite the important findings, the authors noted that the study is a  observational and cannot prove that drinking tea reduces the risk of diabetes, but suggests that it is a likely to a contribute.
